Research Experience
Urology Research Coordinator, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, May 2020-May 2021
Coordinate research within the Department of Urology
Facilitation of Dr. Viraj Master and Dr. Kenneth Ogan’s urologic research projects.
Responsible for multiple stages of the clinical research process including:
- Communication with research coordinators, residents and students concerning projects
- Coordination of study participant consents, clinic visits, procedures such as fitness testing, survey administration, treatment provision
- Data collection, entry and analysis
- Manuscript creation, edits and submission
Projects:
The Testosterone and Frailty project is a protocol for a phase 1 trial investigating feasibility and efficacy of testosterone replacement in patients undergoing major urologic surgery. I was given the opportunity to write the protocol which is underwent submission to Emory’s IRB.
The Pedometer project allocated patients to nutritional supplement or exercise regiments prior to major surgery and monitors their performance on fitness tests prior to and after surgery, measuring perioperative outcomes. My current role was to conduct fitness tests, interact with patients, order laboratory studies, and manage the data entry.
Another set of projects gave me the opportunity to use Slice-O-matic, a software that can read houndsfield unit density, to measure renal parenchymal volume before and after nephrectomy as well as body composition (adipose/skeletal muscle mass) in cancer patients. These ongoing projects allowed me to become more familiar with reading MRIs and CT scans, particularly in patients with renal masses.
In addition, I had the opportunity to work with Emory University Urology residents on several projects. We were able to submit two manuscripts that reviewed minimally invasive inguinal lymph node dissection. Through this process, I was able to advance my knowledge of robotic dissection and the process of manuscript preparation and submission.
Urology Research Participant, University Hospitals, Cleveland, OH, February 2020 – May 2021
Assisted with literature review and manuscript writing/ preparation for a review manuscript concerned with the effect of testosterone levels on lower urinary tract symptoms. Reviewed literature and prepared manuscript with UH residents. This manuscript was a NSQIP database review that aims to elaborate on the relationship between operative time and perioperative outcomes among patients undergoing radical cystectomy. It also attempted to establish relationships between pre-operative patient characteristics and risk for increased operative time.
- Assisted with writing of NSQIP review manuscript titled: Complications and Outcomes Between Primary Implantation and Revision Artificial Urinary Sphincter Surgery. This paper evaluated the differences in clinical outcomes between men who underwent primary versus revision artificial urinary sphincter implantation. This manuscript also aimed to elucidate the relationships between patient demographics/characteristics and complications from AUS placement.
Urology Research Intern, Summa Health System, Akron, OH, June 2018-January 2020
Assisted with clinical research project to administer IPSS surveys pre-operatively to carotid endarterectomy patients
- Measured rates of post-operative urinary retention in these patients and determined whether IPSS survey scores predicted urinary retention post-operatively
- Participation in writing abstract and presented the poster at a regional meeting
Orthopedics Research Intern, Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron, OH, June 2017-Present
Assisted with bench research project to compare growth plates from different anatomical locations
Performed comparisons of genetic expression for key chondrocyte proliferation genes and growth plate structure
- Assisted in reviewing past literature on growth plate comparisons to build a foundation for the project
- Manuscript submitted to the Journal of Orthopedic Research for publication this November 2019
- This experience allowed me to learn the research process form idea inception to submission of a final manuscript. This strengthened my knowledge on how to review literature, assemble portions of a manuscript, how to work effectively in the laboratory on bench research, and how to interpret statistics in a meaningful way
Ophthalmology Research Intern, Summa Health System Research, Akron, OH, February 2016- July 2016
- Received training about laboratory sterilization practices
- Learned about bench research practices such as running Western blots, running protein assays, growing and maintaining cell culture
- This experience helped me gain valuable experience with techniques involved with bench research and an understanding of the work involved in bringing a bench research project to completion
Summer Practicum, Department of Family and Community Health Sciences, NEOMED, Summer, 2015
- “Vaccinations (MMR) and Social Determinants.” A. Bhola, A. Chen, A. Dega, P. Nidamanuri, C. Pathmathasan B. Petrinec, J. Varre.

Community Service
Akron Canton Food Bank, Akron, 2019-April 2020
- Sorted and packed donated food and goods to be distributed to families fighting hunger in the Akron, Ohio
- This experience allowed me to continue to give back to the Akron area. I valued the opportunity to help provide resources for those struggling to buy necessities for their families. This experience, along with my time at the Haven of Rest helped create a passion for underserved patient populations.
Haven of Rest Ministries, Akron, 2012- April 2020
- Served food to the residents of Haven of Rest, a non-profit homeless shelter in Akron, Ohio
- Sorting canned food and clothing to be given to Homeless Akron residents who have no access to stable food, shelter or clothing
- This experience allowed me to continue to foster an appreciation for serving those less fortunate than I am and inspired me to continue seeking out opportunities for serving underserved populations as a future physician. It was also a humble reminder that you do not need a professional degree or surgical skills to make an impact on those in need.
Outreach Student Free Clinic, Akron, 2019- April 2020
- Served as a volunteer in the NEOMED Outreach Clinic, a student run free health care clinic that provides primary care services to the underserved population in Northeast Ohio
- Involved performing history and physical examinations on patients, ordering laboratory testing, creating assessments and plans for patient’s ongoing medical conditions
- Involves physical exams, basic labs, medications and management of chronic conditions
- This experience allowed me to provide care to underserved patients. This experience reminded me of many of the reasons I chose medicine in the first place: to help those who have slipped through the cracks of the healthcare and need help.
NEOMED Student Tutor, Rootstown, 2017- April 2020
- Tutored first year students in the subjects of biochemistry and physiology
- This involved making PowerPoints and lesson plans to help younger students better master content in their core classes
- I found this experience extremely gratifying as it allowed me to use knowledge I had gained to assist other students in their academic endeavors. Experiences like these excite me about opportunities to teach residents and students in my future career.
Christ Community Chapel, Hudson, OH 2010-2016
- Assisted with youth ministries events primarily for middle school aged children, including sporting events, evening worship, summer daycare and recreational events for children in the local school system
- This experience continued to foster my desire to give back to a church community that has invested in me, and allows me to continue to explore my religious beliefs. In addition, it prepared me for caring for younger age groups and the differences that come with speaking to and working with children and their parents.
Disaster Training, Summa Health System, Akron, OH, 2016
- Played a patient character in a Volunteered as a patient character during a disaster simulation event in which fake patients flooded the emergency room. This provided the ER staff the opportunity to assess whether they were ready for a disaster event during the Republican national convention.
- Provided me with the opportunity to volunteer for an important training event and gave me an appreciation for the importance of teamwork during high stakes situations.
- This allowed me to gain an idea of how busy the emergency room can be and helped me to appreciate how difficult their jobs can are, particularly under significant stress situations. I also gained perspective on how much the emergency room relies on every team member to be engaged for patient care to run smoothly.
Meeting God in Mission, Dominican Republic, 6/2013, 6/2014
- Helped build homes for families, worshipped with the villagers, brought them Bibles and food, running supplies and assisting in medical tent
- These experiences were some of my first working with a population that had limited access to medical care. It opened my eyes to the health care disparities that exist and sparked my continued efforts to make a difference in the lives of those who underserved
