Urology is typically associated with males. The practice of urology involves so much more than males and their reproductive systems. Urologists also treat females. Just as you would see a dermatologist for a skin condition, urologists specialize in urological disorders. The number of conditions they treat and the services they perform may take you by surprise.
Urology Credentials and the Services they Offer
Urology residencies take a minimum of 5 years of training once graduating from medical school. This time is spent learning the different urological disorders and injuries, the male reproductive system, and general surgery training. Urological disorders cover the kidneys, ureter, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs. The general services for both men and women typically covered are kidney stones, blood in urine, overactive bladder, and urinary tract infections.

Conditions Treated (Females)
At UCNT, we use advanced technology to deliver the most minimally invasive treatment possible. For erectile dysfunction, we use Corewave therapy as a painless, in-office treatment in a serious of sessions. In addition, we offer various surgical approaches for vasectomies, so each patient is comfortable. A complete listing of the technology we use can be found here.
Seeing a Urologist
You may be referred to a urologist if you have any symptoms of the conditions above. For example, painful urination with increased frequency and urgency of urination may be a urinary tract infection. For men, it could also be symptoms of an enlarged prostate. A urologist can adequately test, diagnose, and treat these conditions, so you are not misdiagnosed.
Urologists also do preventative screenings for prostate cancer, which is recommended for men 55 and older. Depending on your insurance, you may need a referral from your family doctor, but others do not require it. Checking with your health insurance can clarify that.
