March is the busiest month of the year for vasectomies. Approximately 500,000 men in the United States get vasectomies each year, and a large percent of them get scheduled for the beginning of March. You may find it hard to get an appointment this month, and the reason behind it is basketball. March Madness draws droves of men to their television sets to watch the NCAA’s college finest duke it out for the national championship. Since vasectomies take a few days to heal and rest is needed, many men are getting them done during March Madness.
What to Expect
The procedure itself takes about 15 minutes and is done under local anesthesia. One or two small incisions or punctures are made in the scrotum to gain access to the vas deferens. The vas deferens are what transport the semen from each of the testes to the urethra. Once located, it is cut or blocked.
The ends are then closed off by sear and suture or suture alone. The process is repeated on the other vas deferens. The scrotum cuts may be closed with stitches or allowed to close on their own. Recovery time is approximately 2-3 days, with no sex or substantial lifting activities for a week. There are still sperm in the “pipeline” until it is all cleared, so you will still need to use protection or birth control until a semen analysis validates the all-clear.
When is it the Right Time?
Other than abstinence, a vasectomy procedure is more effective at preventing pregnancies than any other form of birth control. Vasectomies are less expensive and less invasive than a woman tying her tubes. Your sexual performance won’t be affected, and you have the benefit of not worrying about an unintended pregnancy. They are designed to be permanent and trying to conceive after one can be costly and carries no guarantees. So, talk with your partner to cover all the bases in your decision.
