The GreenLight Laser is a minimally invasive alternative to the more traditional transurethral resection (TURP) for an enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate (aka BPH or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) affects many men and can cause urinary frequency, urgency, weak stream, straining, and excessive nighttime urination. Advanced BPH can cause urinary retention, blood in the urine, recurrent urinary tract infections, and rarely renal failure. While medications can be used for management, some patients will progress on medications or not experience enough relief from medications. In these patients, a GreenLight may be a good option.
The GreenLight Laser procedure is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. Most patients can go home the same day of surgery, though some may need to stay overnight. The transurethral procedure is performed through a telescope and uses a laser to evaporate prostate tissue. Following the procedure, the benign prostate tissue that was obstructing the flow of urine will be removed to allow a better flow of urine. Most patients will require a temporary urinary catheter during the healing process.
The GreenLight Laser has been extensively studied with over 1,000 articles published. (Click Here to Read More)
