A gradual decline in testosterone levels is normal as a man ages, but what does it mean to have abnormally low testosterone and what can be done about it? Our physicians and team put together some information to help you navigate through this very common condition.
Defining Low-T
Testosterone plays a vital role in a man’s overall health; everything from sex drive and appearance to muscle and bone mass. Testosterone does gradually decrease with age, typically affecting up to 2 out of 10 men over the age of 60.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, a normal testosterone level is between 300-1000 ng/dL. If testosterone levels fall below this range, it is defined as Low Testosterone or Low-T.
Symptoms of Low-T
There are several symptoms associated with low levels of testosterone. We’ve compiled 12 of the most common here.
- Decreased sex drive
- Hair loss
- Difficulty with erection
- Low semen volume
- Loss of muscle mass
- Fatigue
- Decreased bone mass
- Changes in mood
- Increased body fat
- Memory problems
- Low blood count
- Smaller testicle size
These symptoms can also be associated with other conditions, so it’s important to speak with your urologist to determine the exact cause of symptoms. Blood tests and other examinations can be performed to confirm a proper diagnosis.
Causes of Low-T
As we mentioned, age is a big factor when it comes to low testosterone. Other causes can be related to treatments such as radiation for cancer or even antidepressant or opioid use, obesity, metabolic conditions like high blood pressure, as well as certain autoimmune disease and pituitary gland disease. Those with HIV and AIDS also tend to have lower levels of testosterone as well.
Treatment Options
Once it’s been determined that you have low testosterone, you do have options. The most common option is testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). This can be done in the form of injections, gels, and pellets placed under the skin. Most men (up to 70 percent) utilize TRT gels that are applied to the shoulders or upper arms after showering.
TRT is used to increase low levels of testosterone and must be used continuously. If treatment is stopped, testosterone will again fall to low levels.
